Flowers are symbolic of many things
including youth, beauty, growth and development, fertility, and most
interestingly, sexuality. In a historical sense, flowers also represent
Florida, as Ponce De Leon named the state after its wide array of flowers. I
intend to focus on the sexuality of mainly youth in Florida utilizing flowers
as sexual symbols/innuendos. Young people in Florida (and the rest of America)
have increasing pressures to look a certain way and to engage in sexual acts-
this trend has resulted in high rate of pregnant teens and young men/women with
psychological and/or physiological disorders.
Of course with all things in life, not everything is strictly black and white,
and thus there will be a metaphysical quality to some of the images to
insinuate a duality of the topic. When people think of Florida they don’t
imagine the reality that young adults face concerning sexuality and how it is a
huge problem (Florida is ranked 15th
for highest teen pregnancy rate of out 51).
